We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy horror films: Get comfortable with your loved one and stream Together. The independent film success of 2025 just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but beneath Together resides a deep meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.
A Debut Feature Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.
The narrative starts when the couple move from the metropolis to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an underground cave. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.
The complete narrative is a slow burn of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, unsettling (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling aura of dread.
Complex Characterizations
A great deal of Together is only the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his sense of self in another person. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Both characters confront the type of challenges that arise in any relationship over a long period. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor avoids being hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Divisive Ending
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Conversely, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own interpretation could function as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can undertake today.
Together is currently playing on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
