Whenever a significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always an outcry to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. The same goes for tabletop games, which is someone's personal cause. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories actually cover a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year that have no home at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category that year
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles in the world and have been for over a decade.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.
The Solution and Justification
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, creating some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
