Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches set to start on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of being involved.

"We know that the clock is ticking and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that he did not know if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
