Colombian Leader Says 'I Shall Return to Arms Again' should American Forces Launches an Attack.

The US President and President Gustavo Petro have escalated the tone of their exchange, increasing strains bilaterally following US forces attacked Venezuela with the aim of deposing President Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Rising Threats and Accusations

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, the US president hinted at analogous armed intervention against Bogotá, claiming Colombia is “very sick too” and led by an unwell individual who likes making cocaine and trafficking it to the United States."

While Colombia stands as the world’s largest source of the narcotic, no proof exists that President Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the business.

A Frayed Alliance

This nation has long been a staunch collaborator of the US in the struggle against narcotics trade and enjoyed bipartisan support in Washington, but relations have worsened markedly after Trump came to office.

Its narcotics trade is largely controlled by guerrilla factions such as the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the former Farc guerrillas, a large contingent of whom laid down arms following a landmark accord.

Petro's Firm Rebuttal

Upon being questioned if military intervention like that in Venezuela was a possibility regarding Colombia, Trump said: "It sounds good from my perspective."

The Colombian leader, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the last century, rejected the accusations. "I am not illegitimate nor am I a drug trafficker," he affirmed.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed in a post.

"If US bombs target civilians, they will transform into thousands of guerrillas in the hills. If they capture the president, whom a large part of Colombians admires and supports, they will unleash the fierce spirit of the nation," the president cautioned.

From Guerrilla to Leader

The president dedicated some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed that he never took part in armed clashes. Following his disarmament, he participated in writing a new constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the Colombian capital prior to his election the nation's highest office.

"I swore to abstain from using a weapon again ... but for the homeland I will take up arms again," he said.

Increased Security and Broad Condemnation

Minister Pedro Sánchez reported that the president’s protection team had received additional support.

Several members of Colombia’s right wing opposition have allied themselves with Trump, however, leaders spanning the ideological divide have condemned the threats of a US attack on Colombia.

Bilateral and Financial Sanctions

The US cancelled the president's entry visa subsequent to he encouraged American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. In October, authorities imposed economic restrictions targeting Petro, his wife and various associates.

At the same time the US was building up its military presence near Venezuela and bombing alleged narcotics traffickers to put pressure on Venezuela’s Maduro, the US also carried out attacks on maritime targets off the Pacific coast off the Colombian coast.
