Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights impacting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend floated over the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves especially affected by weather conditions rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and present no risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
